Aluminium is the most abundant metal to be found in nature. Aluminium is extracted from its main ore by an electrolytic process, a fairly expensive process owing to the high levels of electricity required. Therefore aluminium tends to have a higher cost than steel.

- Lightweight (2990 kg/m^3)
- Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
- Easy to machine and form
- Good corrosion resistance due to thin layer of aluminium oxide on the outer surface
- Good thermal and electrical conductivity
Pure aluminium isn’t normally used as an engineering material. To increase its strength aluminium tends to be alloyed with small amounts of manganese, silicon, copper, magnesium or zinc.
